![]() Udayan’s wildly revolutionary spirit and it’s resulting vagaries feel subdued under Lahiri’s clinical and measured tone, but it makes one secretly root for him. ![]() Subhash’s grounded practicality keeps the story real, though the reader often gets a glimpse of his poetic heart. The title of the book is in many ways a metaphor for Subhash’s character. The story is intricately woven with an art only a master like her possesses. Themes that have embellished Lahiri’s other works also reoccur here - those of deep loss, cultural diaspora and homecoming. ![]() After what was perhaps the only moment in the story that took my breath away, her life, and subsequently her daughter’s, becomes inseparable from Subhash’s. ![]() Udayan’s ardent involvement in the cause puts the life of all those he loves at risk, including that of his parents’ and young pregnant wife’s (the sister of one of his comrades). ![]()
