The trilogy went viral and is now transferring – with bigger puppets, new actors and a good deal more cardboard – to the Little Angel theatre in London. “Even if that just lasted 15 minutes, that’s something I will always be proud of.” In the lockdown of spring 2020, Wilde and director Ian Nicholson created homemade online productions of Jon Klassen’s trilogy of subversive children’s picture books, starting with I Want My Hat Back, in which a ponderous bear searches for his missing pointy red hat. ‘W e made nearly half a million kids happy with a cardboard box,” says set designer Sam Wilde. ![]()

I was not the only cynic and John Wagner’s Judge Dredd: America for Judge Dredd Magazine was a powerful reminder how the medium of Science Fiction and Comics can perfectly distil a contemporary story but set it in the future. I had relatives who live there and was far more aware of the other side of the country the race tensions, of families living in a single Motel room, the lack of a safety net. They had all been taken in by the glossy American films and TV shows that suggested that even if you were unemployed, you would own a swanky loft apartment. Growing up my group of friends was obsessed with America and all wanted to move there. ![]() ![]() ![]() It’s a pretty white list, only three black writers, to my chagrin. Whilst most are set in the UK or the US, we also travel around Europe, and to Africa. The stories span the centuries – from 1327 to some time in the future – and the continents. I’ve linked to reviews, where they are not too spoilery. Many are in series, and I have been completely inconsistent in whether I cite the first in the series, or the latest, or just one I happen to particularly care for. Not ranked, just in alphabetical order of author’s names, only one title per author allowed. So, obviously, I had no choice but to put together my own list… I was surprised by how many were completely unfamiliar to me, and by how many of my favourite writers and novels didn’t feature at all.
